Receiving Feedback and Improving Teamwork

Receiving Feedback and Improving Teamwork

When building effective teams it is easy to put all of our efforts in to teaching people how to give feedback whilst overlooking the fact that we also need to support of our staff with the emotionally complex process of hearing it.

Regardless of our skills and experiences many of us can feel defensive and reluctant to engage when we feel we are being criticised, even if this isn’t actually the case. This isn’t a personal failing, it’s a natural response that is shaped across the course of our whole life. We each have a personal relationship with ‘criticism’ that has evolved inside us over time. Learning to manage this in a professional arena is an essential skill that forms the bedrock of open and honest cultures where people feel comfortable talking to one another, with high levels of trust and psychological safety among colleagues.

This course uses a range of interactive methods to help learners recognise their signs of feeling uncomfortable when being criticized or disagreed with and also their personal responses and reactions when they discover they are ‘wrong.’ In addition to this it explores the differences between professionalism, personality and practice to help learners to maintain a positive mind-set when listening to other people’s perceptions of their performance.

Finally, learners will get practical tips and advice on phrases and behaviours they can use to manage their emotional reactions which will help develop the important skill of both accepting critical feedback or disagreeing with it in a positive way that allows a two-way dialogue, turning potentially difficult conversations into relaxed discussions.
